A Milestone Years in the Making

On May 7, 2024, I officially earned my Master of Photography degree from Professional Photographers of America.

This achievement means more to me than simply adding another title after my name. Instead, it represents years of learning, competition, education, service, and personal growth.

The journey was not always easy. However, every challenge helped me become a stronger photographer. Check out her portfolio.

What Is a Master of Photography Degree?

The Master of Photography degree is awarded by Professional Photographers of America, also known as PPA.

Photographers earn the degree through a combination of photographic merit, education, and service to the profession. Therefore, it requires much more than submitting a single portfolio.

Each image must demonstrate strong technique, creativity, lighting, composition, and storytelling.

In addition, photographers must continue learning and contributing to the photography community.

Why This Achievement Matters to Me

Earning this degree has been one of my most significant professional goals.

Over the years, I entered photographic competitions, attended classes, studied new techniques, and pushed myself to try new things.

Occasionally the process was frustrating. Nevertheless, I kept going.

Each competition taught me something new. Likewise, every critique helped me see my work differently.

As a result, I became more intentional with my lighting, composition, editing, and storytelling.

The People Who Helped Me Along the Way

Although this degree has my name on it, I did not complete the journey alone.

My husband, Jeff Birmingham, and Kevin Dooley both encouraged me to keep moving forward and pushed me to finish when I doubted myself. More importantly, he pushed me to finish when I doubted myself.

I am also grateful for the photographers, judges, educators, friends, and family members who supported me.

Their feedback made me better. Their encouragement also reminded me why I started this journey.

More Than an Award

For me, this degree is not only about recognition.

Instead, it represents growth.

I now approach photography with more confidence and purpose. I also have a more profound understanding of what makes an image successful.

Most importantly, the experience has made me a better teacher.

When I help another photographer understand camera settings, composition, light, or wildlife behavior, I can draw from everything I learned during this process.

Continuing the Journey

Photography is a journey that never truly ends.

There will always be another technique to learn, another location to explore, and another story to tell.

Therefore, earning my Master of Photography degree is not the end. It is simply another step forward. At the current time I am working on the CPP and Craftsmen Certificates, and if I stay on track, I will receive them in 2026.

I am proud of this accomplishment. At the same time, I am excited about what comes next.
