If you’ve been searching for the best Costa Rica photography tour, you’ve come to the right place. Our Costa Rica Wildlife Photography Workshops are designed for photographers who want to photograph the country’s world-famous biodiversity, from dazzling hummingbirds and scarlet macaws to the legendary resplendent quetzal.

Costa Rica is one of the top destinations in the world for wildlife and bird photography. With more than 900 species of birds, lush rainforests, cloud forests, and tropical rivers, it’s a paradise for nature photographers of all levels. During my visit in March 2024, I logged 60 new life bird counts in just 7 days, and in 2026, I logged 18 new lifers. This just shows how bird-rich and rewarding Costa Rica is for photographers and birders alike. Below are screenshots of my Merlin-recorded birds from my trip in March 2024.

This Costa Rica photo tour includes expert instruction, small groups, and special access to some of the best places to take pictures. You’ll come home with a portfolio full of unforgettable photos.

Why Choose a Costa Rica Photography Tour?

This is not like other travel packages; it is a guided Costa Rica photo workshop made just for photographers. Every place, activity, and guide was chosen with photography in mind, so you have the best chances of seeing rare species and amazing animal behavior.

Highlights include:

  • Hummingbird Photography in Costa Rica – Capture multiple species in flight, from the Coppery-headed Emerald to the Violet Sabrewing, using both multi-flash and natural light setups.
  • Resplendent Quetzal Photography – Dedicated sessions in the cloud forests give you the chance to photograph this bucket-list bird, which is known as one of the most beautiful in the world.
  • Scarlet Macaw Photography – Learn techniques for photographing these vibrant birds in flight as they soar above the canopy.
  • Toucans, Parrots & Tanagers – Colorful rainforest birds like the Emerald Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, and honeycreepers will fill your memory cards with brilliant images.
  • Monkeys & River Wildlife – Private boat charters allow for close encounters with Howler Monkeys, White-faced Capuchins, Green Iguanas, herons, kingfishers, and more.

The beautiful quetzal was the most-wanted bird of the trip.

The resplendent quetzal is considered “near threatened” because its habitat is being lost and its numbers are dropping. Only about 50,000 of them are left in the wild. Their numbers are going down, but they are not yet considered endangered. This makes them a bird that needs to be protected. There are a lot of them in Costa Rica, especially in protected cloud forests like Monteverde Cloud Forest, San Gerardo de Dota, and Arenal. Which is planned for us.

This picture was taken during my trip in March 2024. We spent two afternoons and more than four hours with the birds. Just amazing.
